What do I get if I rehome a pet?

Dogs

Some of the dogs in our care have come in to us as strays and we do not know their history or habits. During their stay with us, however, their behaviour is constantly assessed and we always pass as much information as we know onto their new owners. Some of the dogs are unwanted for various reasons (usually through no fault of their own) and we always pass on any information given to us by their previous owner.

All dogs are health checked by a Vet and given their first Vaccinations if no evidence of previous vaccination is available. They are vaccinated against Distemper; Hepatitis; Parvovirus; Para-influenza & Leptospirosis, leaving just the 2nd part of their Leptospirosis vaccination outstanding, which is due 2 to 4 weeks after the first one – this can be completed at All 4 Pets Vets for a discounted price.

If the dog has been with us for longer than 4 weeks the 2nd part of the vaccination will have been given.

All dogs are Microchipped – we register the microchips on your behalf to the appropriate database. Registration papers are then posted out directly to your address or sometimes sent by email by the database themselves.

All dogs adopted from us are given 4 weeks free pet insurance which covers accident, injury and illness. Of course we hope you never need to use this but if you do there is an excess of £100 to pay. You are then covered for up to £4000 of vet fees. The insurance is with Petplan and is valid at any Vet.

PetPlan Insurance

All animals adopted from us are given 4 weeks free pet insurance which covers accident, injury or illness. If used within the four weeks there is an excess of £100 for dogs and £85 for cats.

Towards the end of the free 4 week period Petplan will usually contact you to ask if you wish to take out their insurance. It is very important to have pet insurance just in case the unexpected happens to your pet which could incur very expensive vet fees.

Pet insurance

People tend to think it’s only older pets that get ill, and therefore younger pets don’t need pet insurance, but we know from the patients we see each day that this is not the case.
In fact, the younger your pet is when you insure them the better it could be as it means you are less likely to have any existing conditions, which may not be covered by the policy, and you can then receive more help covering the cost of any future treatment your pet needs.
It is important to note that not all pet insurance is the same. There are many different types of policy available and the level of cover provided can vary considerably. The four main types of policy are as follows:

Accident:  Provides cover for accidents only and no cover for illness.

Time-Limited: Provides cover for a set amount of time (usually 12 months) and after this period the condition is excluded.

Maximum Benefit: Provides cover up to a maximum amount of money per condition and once this limit is reached the condition is excluded.

Lifetime: Provides a set amount of money each year which is refreshed each time you renew
your policy allowing you to continue to claim for ongoing conditions.

As you can see from the information above, the type of policy you choose can have implications for the veterinary care of your pet and the costs you will face so it’s important to choose the right cover.

Sometimes, the cheapest insurance can cost you more in the long run. When shopping around for a policy, we suggest that you ask the following questions to allow you to compare the overall value you are getting, not just the price:

1. Does this policy cover congenital, hereditary, hip-related, dental and behavioral conditions?
2. Is there a time or monetary limit on how long this policy will cover ongoing conditions for?
3. If I claim, will my premium increase?

Unlike other forms of insurance it is not easy to switch pet insurance in the future as any pre-existing conditions your pet has are likely to be excluded so it’s important to do your research and choose the right cover from the start.
