Alfie

‘Alfie’ Just under 4 years old, Male, Miniature Dachshund. Alfie is looking for a home as he was snappy with the children in the household. On examination it is apparent that he has had a back issue which was not declared when he was admitted. It is highly likely that he has had a disc problem which has resolved now but left him with residual ataxia, meaning his back legs often appear out of control as he is moving around. This is not affecting him getting around but it is unlikely to get any better than it is now, though it shouldn’t get worse either. It is not uncommon to see this with Dachshunds and there is always a chance of further problems with his spine (though the risk is not increased due to the existing issue). Because of the discomfort in his back he does not like to be picked up or overly handled, and we suspect this is what has caused him to be snappy with the children in his last home. He is otherwise a happy little dog and just needs a home that is reasonably quiet and an owner who understands the implications of owning this type of dog with pre-existing spinal issues.
